B-Stepper

“B-Stepper” had a near-fatal accident in December of 2022. He was in the hospital for a total of seven months, and half of that time he was in a coma. Ultimately, he went to live with his father, who passed away, destroying that lifeline.

He ended up in a drug/alcohol recovery center. At some point he went to jail for a time.

When B-Stepper became homeless, he initially slept on benches and picnic tables. Friends have let him put tents on their properties. He explained that he survived all of that because the Lord watched out for him. He's been kicked out of shelters for breaking the rules, but currently resides in one.

B-Stepper has specific goals. He currently works, but hopes for a better job and an apartment of his own. He loves Vincennes and plans to stay there. He also plans to grow as a Christian.

Casey

Casey lives in a homeless shelter. He works in a highly responsible job at a local company. When I met him, he was helping another homeless man work on his car. He helped me unload some donations as we talked a bit.

His life was completely normal, until it wasn't. He had a job, a wife, children and an apartment. His wife had a miscarriage which caused her to unravel and to turn to drugs. He says that within three weeks his world crumbled and he lost everything.

Initially, Casey couch-hopped before getting in a shelter. He says that the house manager, Troy, is “a star.” He was very complementary of “First City Sunrise” and how they go above, and beyond, to help people.

He says that faith is crucial to survival. He also noted that the homeless watch out for each other and have a real sense of community with one another.

Miss A

A lady that wishes to be unnamed was married, but was a victim of violent abuse. She left and became homeless rather than stay in a dangerous marriage. She recently left the shelter for her own apartment. She stays in touch with the homeless in the area, and I see her as a nurturing force with them. She recently changed jobs to work as a caregiver. Everything is looking up for her as she builds a happier, safer life. She also has a deep faith in God.

Pregnant and Homeless

A couple who made some poor choices were both using drugs and homeless when they found out she was pregnant. They moved into our shelter and went through the program. She delivered a beautiful baby, and they are living in their own home with all 3 of their children, clean from drugs and with a good, stable job.

Searching for Husband.

A husband and wife were living in Florida. The husband unfortunately had dementia and she was caring for him. One day when she was at the store his son came and brought him to Indiana and would not let his wife see him. She drove all the day from Florida before running out of money in Vincennes. We offered her a place to stay while she was figuring out how to see her husband.
